Bengaluru Police Warn Passengers Against Boarding Cabs or Autos With Mismatched Registration Numbers

Bengaluru City Police have issued a strong advisory to commuters using app based cab and auto services, asking them not to board vehicles if the registration number shown in the booking app does not match the vehicle that arrives for pickup. The warning comes amid increasing complaints from passengers about mismatched vehicle details on ride hailing platforms.

The city police have made it clear that passenger safety remains their highest priority. Officials said any difference between the vehicle information displayed in the app and the actual vehicle arriving at the pickup point should be treated seriously. Commuters have been advised to cancel such rides immediately and report the matter to the authorities.

In recent months, several users of ride booking platforms such as Ola, Uber, Rapido and Namma Yatri have reported receiving vehicles with registration numbers that differ from those displayed in their bookings. Many passengers have shared their experiences on social media, claiming that such mismatches have become increasingly common.

According to several users, drivers often offer explanations such as technical issues with the app or financial reasons when questioned about the discrepancy. However, police have stressed that such justifications should not be accepted if the vehicle details do not match the booking information.

Officials warned that mismatched vehicle records can create serious challenges during investigations if an accident, crime or any other emergency occurs during the journey. When the registered vehicle in the app differs from the one actually used for the ride, identifying responsibility and tracing the vehicle becomes much more difficult.

The police have requested commuters to immediately report such incidents by calling the 112 emergency helpline or informing the nearest traffic police station. Prompt reporting will help authorities take action against violations and strengthen passenger safety.

The advisory also includes a warning for drivers and ride aggregation companies. Police stated that allowing another person to operate a registered driver account, using fake documents or running unregistered vehicles on ride hailing platforms is illegal and will invite strict legal action.

Authorities further emphasized that app based mobility companies are responsible for regularly verifying the identity of drivers and ensuring that only properly registered vehicles operate through their platforms. They have been instructed to strengthen background verification processes and maintain accurate records to protect passengers.

With app based transport becoming an essential part of daily travel in Bengaluru, police have urged commuters to remain alert before beginning every trip.
