Heavy Rain Alert for Coastal Karnataka as Orange Warning Issued for Uttara Kannada
The weather department has forecast widespread rainfall across Karnataka with an Orange Alert for Uttara Kannada, school closures in vulnerable areas, and continued monsoon activity over coastal and interior districts
Monsoon activity has intensified across Karnataka, with the India Meteorological Department forecasting heavy rainfall in several parts of the state. Uttara Kannada has been placed under an Orange Alert for July 24 after officials warned of the possibility of intense rain at isolated locations.
As a precautionary measure, the district administration has declared a holiday for anganwadis, primary schools, and high schools in Sirsi and Siddapur taluks. The decision was taken to ensure the safety of students as weather conditions are expected to remain adverse throughout the day.
Coastal Karnataka is likely to continue receiving steady rainfall over the next two days. Heavy showers are expected in parts of Uttara Kannada, while Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts are likely to witness light to moderate rain across many areas. Strong winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometres per hour may also accompany the showers in some places.
The rainfall is not expected to remain confined to the coast. Several districts in North Interior Karnataka, including Bagalkote, Belagavi, Bidar, Dharwad, Gadag, Kalaburagi, Raichur, and Vijayapura, are likely to experience light to moderate rain along with gusty winds of up to 50 kilometres per hour. Similar weather conditions have also been forecast for Haveri, Koppal, and Yadgir.
South Interior Karnataka is also expected to remain under the influence of active monsoon conditions. Rain accompanied by strong winds is likely in districts such as Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, and Mysuru. Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, Kodagu, Mandya, Hassan, Chamarajanagar, Tumakuru, Kolar, and Chikkaballapur are among the districts expected to receive moderate rainfall during the day.
The weather department has also predicted that rainfall will continue on July 25 across the coastal districts of Uttara Kannada, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada. Many parts of South Interior Karnataka are also expected to receive widespread showers, indicating that the active monsoon phase is likely to persist.
Rainfall recorded during the 24 hours ending Thursday afternoon reflects the strength of the current monsoon spell. Brahmavara in Udupi district, Jagalbet and Joida in Uttara Kannada district, Uppinangady in Dakshina Kannada district, and Londa in Belagavi district each recorded 7 centimetres of rainfall, making them among the wettest locations in the state during the reporting period.
