Young Cricketer Allegedly Blackmailed After Dating App Video Call Scam in Bengaluru

A young cricketer has reportedly fallen victim to an online blackmail scheme after connecting with a woman through a dating app while staying in Bengaluru. Cybercrime police are investigating the case after the victim alleged that he was threatened with the release of a private video unless he paid large sums of money.

According to the complaint, the incident took place when the Maharashtra based cricketer was staying at a private five star hotel in the northern part of Bengaluru. He had registered his mobile number on a dating application, where he came into contact with an unknown woman.

Police said the woman later initiated a video call. During the conversation, she allegedly behaved in a sexually explicit manner and encouraged the cricketer to do the same. Believing the interaction to be genuine, the victim reportedly removed his clothes during the call. The video call ended after about 30 seconds.

A short time later, the situation took a dramatic turn. The woman and her alleged associates reportedly sent screenshots and recordings from the video call to the cricketer. They then threatened to circulate the content on social media unless he transferred money to them.

Fearing damage to his reputation, the victim allegedly made the requested payment. However, the demands did not stop after the first transfer. According to the complaint, the accused continued to contact him and repeatedly asked for more money while threatening to release the private video online.

After facing continuous pressure, the cricketer sought advice from friends and approached the Bengaluru Cyber Crime Police Station to file a formal complaint. A case has been registered, and investigators are now working to identify those involved in the alleged extortion racket.

Cybercrime officials have used the incident to remind the public about the dangers of interacting with strangers on dating platforms and social media. They advised users to avoid sharing personal information with unknown individuals and to be cautious while accepting video calls from people they have never met.

Police also warned that online blackmail and sextortion cases have become more common in recent years. Criminals often record private conversations or video calls and use the content to intimidate victims into sending money.

Authorities further noted that fraudsters are increasingly using advanced digital tools, including artificial intelligence, to make scams appear more convincing. They urged people to remain alert while using online platforms and to report suspicious activity immediately instead of giving in to demands for money.

Investigators continue to examine the case, while cybercrime officials stress that awareness and quick reporting remain the most effective ways to prevent such online extortion attempts.
