
The southwest monsoon has intensified across Karnataka, bringing widespread rainfall to the coastal and Malnad regions. Based on the expected weather conditions, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued district-wise Yellow and Red Alerts. The warnings have been issued to ensure public safety as the risk of flooding and landslides increases in several parts of the state.
Yellow Alert for Interior Karnataka:
A Yellow Alert has been issued for several districts in North Interior Karnataka and South Interior Karnataka, including Bengaluru, Mysuru, Hassan, Shivamogga, and Chikkamagaluru, during the first week of July.
These districts are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall (64.5 mm to 115.4 mm). Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds of 30–40 kmph are also expected. While there is no immediate threat, residents are advised to stay updated with weather forecasts. Those planning to travel should exercise caution, as waterlogging and fallen trees may disrupt traffic.
Orange Alert on July 3–4:
The IMD has issued an Orange Alert for the coastal districts on July 3 and 4, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, Bengaluru and other interior regions are expected to experience cloudy skies with intermittent rainfall.
Red Alert for Coastal Karnataka:
A Red Alert has been issued for the coastal districts of Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Uttara Kannada from July 5 to July 7, as these areas are expected to receive extremely heavy rainfall exceeding 204.5 mm in 24 hours.
The intense rainfall could lead to rising river levels, flooding in low-lying areas, and a high risk of landslides in hilly regions. Authorities have advised the public to avoid all non-essential travel, remain indoors as much as possible, and follow official weather advisories and safety instructions.
