India Ranks Fifth Globally in Spam Calls as Truecaller Flags Rising Digital Disturbance

Truecaller report highlights India’s growing spam problem with high daily call volumes and rising scam risks, placing the country fifth worldwide while raising concerns over communication safety and user trust

India is now facing an uncomfortable digital reality as spam calls continue to flood mobile phones across the country. What once felt like occasional disturbance has turned into a daily pattern for millions of users who hesitate before answering unknown numbers. According to a recent Truecaller report, India now ranks fifth globally in terms of spam call volume, trailing only countries like Indonesia, Chile, Vietnam and Brazil.

The report reveals a striking figure that defines the scale of the issue. India carries a spam intensity score of 66 percent, meaning nearly two out of every three unknown calls could be unwanted or potentially unsafe. On an average day, many users reportedly receive two to three spam calls, turning mobile interruptions into a routine frustration rather than an exception.

What makes the situation more concerning is how the nature of these calls is changing. Earlier, most spam calls were limited to promotional offers or telemarketing. Now the pattern has shifted toward more risky categories. Around 36 percent of calls are linked to sales or marketing, 18 percent relate to financial services such as loans or credit cards, while nearly 12 percent fall into scam or fraud attempts involving fake banking alerts and KYC requests.

Truecaller data also points out that millions of hours are being lost every day as people either ignore or deal with these unwanted calls. This silent time drain is slowly affecting how people interact with unknown numbers, leading to a growing habit of avoiding unfamiliar calls altogether.

The issue is not limited to voice calls alone. India is also witnessing a sharp rise in spam SMS messages, with billions of unwanted texts circulating across networks. These messages often carry promotional content or fraudulent links, adding another layer of digital irritation and risk for users.

Across the world, spam trends vary widely. In some countries, financial institutions dominate spam activity, while in others telecom promotions or debt collection calls are more common. India stands out because it sees a mixed pattern of commercial promotions and scam attempts, making the threat more unpredictable for users.

Experts point to several reasons behind this surge. Rapid digital adoption, widespread data leaks, and automated calling systems have made it easier for spammers to reach large audiences quickly. As technology evolves, especially with automation tools, the scale of such calls is expected to grow further unless stronger protections are enforced.
