Tesla Plans Affordable Compact Electric SUV as Competition Intensifies

Tesla is reportedly developing a smaller and more affordable electric SUV while facing rising competition globally as the company also explores AI chips and new manufacturing strategies

In a move that signals a shift toward affordability, Tesla is reportedly working on a new compact electric SUV that could broaden its customer base. The project is still in early stages, but discussions with suppliers have already begun, indicating that development is slowly gaining momentum.

Unlike the larger Tesla Model Y, the upcoming vehicle is expected to be shorter in length, possibly around 4.28 meters. This downsizing could play a key role in reducing production costs and making the vehicle more accessible to a wider audience. Initial manufacturing is likely to take place in China, although the company has not yet confirmed an official launch timeline.

The strategy comes at a time when Tesla is facing increasing pressure from global rivals. Chinese automaker BYD has already overtaken Tesla in annual EV sales, highlighting the growing competition in key markets. While Tesla delivered around 1.64 million vehicles last year, BYD surged ahead with significantly higher sales figures.

To counter this challenge, Tesla appears to be revisiting its earlier idea of a low cost electric vehicle. The compact SUV is expected to feature a smaller battery pack and a single motor setup, which could help keep its price below that of the Tesla Model 3. Currently, the Model 3 starts at approximately 37000 dollars in the United States, setting a benchmark for Tesla’s entry level pricing.

At the same time, Tesla is expanding beyond automobiles. The company is preparing to enter the artificial intelligence chip segment with a new initiative known as Terafab. This move reflects a broader ambition to strengthen its position in advanced technology and reduce dependence on external suppliers for critical components.

Despite reporting a strong annual revenue of 94.8 billion dollars, Tesla has seen fluctuations in demand in recent quarters. Markets like China have become increasingly competitive, while other regions are still adapting to electric mobility at varying speeds.

In India, Tesla introduced the Model Y last year, but sales have remained below expectations. The company is also exploring the possibility of offering autonomous driving features in the country, although such capabilities may come at an additional cost for buyers.

As Tesla balances innovation with affordability, the planned compact SUV could become a crucial product in its lineup. If executed well, it may help the company regain momentum in a rapidly evolving electric vehicle market.
