Meta tightens teen safety online with AI age detection across Instagram and Facebook

New AI based verification system aims to identify underage users, enforce teen protections automatically, and improve online safety across Meta platforms including Messenger, Reels, and Facebook Groups globally

Meta has started rolling out a stronger safety system powered by artificial intelligence to better protect teenagers across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. The company says the new tools are designed to reduce risks for underage users and prevent people from misrepresenting their age on social media.

Instead of relying only on what users enter during signup, Meta will now use AI based signals to estimate whether an account likely belongs to a teenager. If the system suspects that a user is under 18, the account will automatically shift into a Teen Account mode even if the birthdate says otherwise. This protection will apply across all major Meta apps and will include stricter messaging controls, limited contact from unknown users, and safer default content settings.

The company is also expanding its detection system beyond basic profiles. It will now analyze user behavior such as posts, captions, comments, and even general patterns in photos and videos. Meta clarified that this is not facial recognition technology and does not identify individuals. Instead, it only estimates age range to improve safety measures.

At the same time, Meta is extending these protections to more features like Instagram Reels, Instagram Live, and Facebook Groups. If an account is flagged as potentially underage, it may be restricted or temporarily deactivated until proper age verification is completed.

For verification, users may need to submit government issued identification or use third party tools like Yoti’s facial age estimation system. According to Meta, AI based review systems can now make faster and more consistent decisions compared to earlier manual processes.

The company is also involving parents more actively in the process. Guardians will receive alerts and guidance to help confirm their child’s age settings. Tools inside Meta’s Family Center will continue to offer monitoring features and activity insights to support safer usage.

Meta believes that age verification is not just a single company challenge but a wider industry issue. It has suggested that app stores and operating systems should adopt a more unified verification system so users do not have to repeatedly confirm their age across different platforms.

The rollout is already underway in selected regions. Instagram’s AI based teen detection system is expanding across European Union countries and Brazil, while Facebook is beginning with the United States before moving to the United Kingdom and Europe. Meta has indicated that more countries will be added gradually as the system expands globally.
