Google created the Android Earthquake Alert System, which uses sensors on Android smartphones to detect and estimate earthquakes.

Tech giant Google recently launched Android Earthquake Alert System on Android smartphones in India. The system is already operational in many countries worldwide, providing people with early earthquake warnings.
Our alerts are designed to be easy to read and follow and are available in Indian languages supported by Android.

With this release, we strive to provide Android users with automatic early warning alerts when an earthquake occurs in their area,” Google wrote in a blog post. Earthquakes are one of the most common natural disasters in the world, and early warning is key in helping people prepare and get themselves and their loved ones to safety. That’s why Google created the Android Earthquake Alert System, which uses sensors on Android smartphones to detect and estimate earthquakes.

How it work Android Earthquake Alert System:

According to Google, every Android smartphone has small accelerometers that act as mini seismometers. When the phone is plugged in and charged, it can detect the onset of earthquake tremors.

If multiple phones detect an earthquake-like tremor at the same time, our server can use this information to estimate the likelihood of an earthquake, as well as the characteristics of the event such as its epicenter and magnitude.

Then, Google’s server can send alerts to nearby phones. Internet signals travel at the speed of light, much faster than the transmission of an earthquake shaking through the ground, so alerts often reach phones several seconds before a severe tremor occurs.
