TN Heavy Rains: State declares 2-day local holidays in nine districts

Tamil Nadu: The government declared holiday for schools and colleges in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpet districts on November 8 and 9. Many as nine districts owing to heavy rain forecast and weather situation evolving in the Bay of Bengal.

Districts like Coimbatore, Tirunelveli, Tiruvarur, Villupuram, Erode, Karur, Cuddalore, Pudukottai, Perambalur received more than 60 per cent of normal rainfall (during the season), Stalin said. The death toll in Tamil Nadu due to rain-related incident on Tuesday jumped to five, said Tamil Nadu Revenue and Disaster Management Minister KKSSR Ramachandran.

Adding that 538 huts were damaged and four houses fully damaged. “More damage expected if rain intensifies,” the minister further said. Chennai and nearby regions have experienced intense rains in the last two days, leading to inundation of most areas and opening up of sluice gates of three city reservoirs (Poondi, Chembarambakkam, and Puzhal that serve the drinking water needs of the city) to let out surplus water.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, “Spoke to Tamil Nadu CM, Thiru @mkstalin and discussed the situation in the wake of heavy rainfall in parts of the state. Assured all possible support from the Centre in rescue and relief work. I pray for everyone’s well-being and safety.”

“Under the influence of the cyclonic circulation over southeast Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood, a low-pressure area has formed over the same region. Associated cyclonic circulation extends upto mid-tropospheric levels,” the IMD tweeted.

Meanwhile, the Tamil Nadu government has also conducted health checkups to take preventive measures against fever and other water-borne diseases as the state is reeling under heavy rains and waterlogging. The Public Health Office is monitoring the situation in Chennai and adjacent areas of the district where incessant rains have caused waterlogging, leading to the possibility of outbreak of water-borne diseases.
