Kerala heavy rain: Death toll rises to 15, yellow alert in 11 districts

At least 15 people died after heavy rains lashed across Kerala on Saturday. Many are feared missing as landslides washed away three houses and several bridges in southern and central Kerala. India Meteorological Department issues Yellow alert for heavy rain in eleven districts.

Nine district Kottayam and Idukki have been the worst affected districts due to one of the heaviest downpours in the state in recent years. 12 deaths were reported from the Kottayam district. Three more bodies were recovered from Idukki, taking the death toll to nine, informed Kerala’s Information & Public Relations Department.

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had called the situation “serious” and said that the India Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of heavy rains in the state due to a low-pressure system that has formed over the Arabian Sea. The IMD had informed on Saturday that Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Ernakulam districts would experience thunderstorm along with a wind of 40 kmph speed and lightning.
