Shakti Scheme: Since the Congress government assumed power in the state, five guarantee schemes have been implemented one by one. Karnataka Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy clarified that the Shakti scheme will be implemented in the state for the next 10 years. The reaction came after speculations on social media that free bus travel for women would soon be scrapped and she denied the rumours. Speaking to reporters, Reddy said, ‘I want to tell the people of Karnataka, especially the school children, that some people are spreading false news that they will stop the ‘Shakti’ project as an election guarantee.

Believing rumours, some went to ask for bus pass. Karnataka will have an Shakti scheme for the next 10 years. He said that some members of a particular party are trying to tarnish the party’s prestige by spreading fake news. According to the Karnataka Transport Department, 16.73 crore women passengers travelled by road transport in all the four states in the first month.

About 70 lakh women have travelled on July 4 alone. Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) buses have seen the highest number of women passengers in the first month. Because more than five crore women rode these buses in the capital city of Karnataka.

If we consider the first month ticket value for women passengers, it will cost Rs. 401 crore to the Karnataka government, the transport department has emphasized. All the four transport corporations together are also running additional daily services to meet the demand.

Shakti Yojana is applicable only for regular government bus services in Karnataka. Airawat, Airawat Club Class, Airawat Gold Class, Ambari, Ambari Dream Class, Ambari Utsav, Fly Bus, Vayu Vajra, Vajra, Non AC Sleeper, Rajahamsa and EV Power Plus AC buses are excluded from this scheme. This scheme is not applicable for buses traveling outside the state. Shakti Yojana is one of the five election promises of the Congress ahead of the assembly elections in the state.
