Amid covid-19 cases surge, Union Health ministry issued alert for Karnataka. Health Ministry issued alert 4 states including Karnataka. But of late, certain states have been witnessing a worrying surge in coronavirus infections, and one among them is Karnataka.

In the last 24 hours, the Karnataka has recorded 230 fresh cases; bring its positivity rate at 1.92% and total active cases to 2,441. Naturally, this has spurred officials into establishing the mask mandates again.

Experts have also suggested the state implement COVID-19 guidelines, conduct genomic sequencing tests, increase testing and keep watch on symptomatic international passengers. The COVID-19 situation in Karnataka is being constantly monitored by the Union Health ministry including Maharashtra, Kerala, Delhi.

It has instructed the said states to employ a five-fold strategy: test-track-treat-vaccine and adherence to COVID-19 Appropriate Behaviour are required. The Ministry has also directed the States to keep an eye on clusters of new COVID-19 cases and adopt COVID-19 best practices.

Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan recently wrote to officials in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Tamil Nadu, urging them to actively monitor growing clusters, maintain an adequate number of testing, and send samples from sick people for genetic sequencing.

Few states which are reporting a higher contribution to India’s cases indicating the possibility of a localised spread of infection. There is, therefore, a need to follow a risk assessment based approach on the public health responses without losing the gains made so far in the fight against the pandemic, “reads the letter.
