IMD warned monsoon enter Kerala today; heavy rainfall Alert for next 3-4 days

Heavy rainfall Alert: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) finally declared the onset of southwest monsoon over Kerala on Sunday, three days ahead of its normal date of June 1. IMD warned monsoon enter Kerala today; heavy rainfall alert for next 3-4 days.

Heavy rainfall Alert with thunderstorms and lightning are forecast across Kerala over the next five days, along with isolated heavy falls till June 1. IMD has kept the coastal state under a yellow watch (meaning ‘be updated’) till Thursday, June 2. The MJO may enter an inactive phase next week, and this suppression will likely favour the slow progress of the monsoon.

As per the IMD, conditions are favourable for further advance of monsoon into reaming parts of Kerala, some more parts of Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and northeaster states during the next 3-4 days. Overall, seasonal monsoon rainfall will likely remain 99% of the Long Period Average (LPA) this year, as per both the IMD and The Weather Company’s forecasts.

The IMD defines LPA as the average rainfall recorded during the months from June to September, calculated at 87 mm during the 50-year period, between 1971 and 2020. July and September will likely be the rainiest months this time. In June, low-level easterly winds are likely to cover the southern region.
