Covid-19 cases surge day by day, two state imposed complete lockdown for tomorrow January 23. Tamil Nadu and kerala has announced complete lockdown on Sunday, January 23 amid rising Covid cases. In a release, the Tamil Nadu government said the restrictions and relaxations like the operation of essential services imposed on January 16 will be in place.

Kerala too has decided to keep January 23 and 30 (both Sundays) as a near lockdown with only essential activities permitted. As many as 45,136 more people tested positive for Covid-19 across Kerala in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative tally to 55,74,702, said the state health department on Saturday.

Among the districts, Ernakulam reported the highest number of new infections on Saturday–8,143, followed by Thiruvananthapuram with 7,430 and Thrissur 5,120. Among those who were found infected today, 128 reached the state from outside while 42,340 contracted the disease from their contact. The source of infection of 2,225 is yet to be traced and 443 health workers are also among the infected.

In addition to this, 132 deaths were registered in the state, taking the toll to 51,739. Among today’s fatalities, 70 were recorded over the last few days while 62 were designated as Covid-19 deaths after receiving appeals based on the new guidelines of the Centre and the directions of the Supreme Court.

In between Indian government giving much relief to international travellers arriving in India, the Centre revised guidelines has decided not to make a stay at the Covid isolation facility mandatory. So, now if Covid positive passengers arrive in India from any country, he/she will not mandatorily be managed at an isolation facility today (January 22).

In its revised ‘Guidelines for International Arrivals’, the Centre said foreign arrivals, who test positive, will still have to undergo home quarantine for seven days even after they test negative, and undertake RT-PCR test on the eighth day of arrival in India. Earlier, the rules were that foreign arrivals coming from any country, including those considered ‘at-risk’, would be managed at an isolation facility and treated according to the standard protocols.

India’s daily Covid curve showed marginal improvement today as the country reported 3.37 lakh cases, which is around 2.7 per cent lower than yesterday. With a tally of 3.89 crore cases, India is the second worst-hit country after the US. The active cases have increased to 21,13,365, the highest in 237 days.

The active cases now comprise 5.43 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate has decreased to 93.31 per cent. The daily positivity rate has dropped from 17.94% to 17.22% while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 16.65 per cent. In revised guidelines However, such passengers will have to quarantine themselves at home by following the Covid-19 protocols.
