Vivo out Tata In for IPL 2022, mega auction will be held on February

Tata Group will replace Chinese mobile manufacturer Vivo as the Indian Premier League’s title sponsor from this year, the event’s governing council decided in a meeting on January 11. Vivo out Tata in for IPL 2022, mega auction for IPL 2022 will be held on 12 and 13, February.

Jay Shah, secretary of BCCI, commenting on the decision said, “This is indeed a momentous occasion for the BCCI IPL as the Tata Group is the epitome of global Indian enterprise with an over 100-year-old legacy and operations in more than 100 countries across six continents.”

Shah expressed the board’s pleasure at Tata group’s trust in the IPL growth story and aims to take Indian cricket and the IPL forward to greater heights with India’s largest and most trusted business. He also added, “The BCCI like the TATA Group is keen to promote the spirit of cricket across international borders and the growing popularity of the IPL as a global sporting franchise, bears testimony to the BCCI’s efforts.”

Vivo had a deal worth Rs 2200 crore for title sponsorship rights from 2018-2022, but after the Galwan Valley military confrontation between the Indian and Chinese armies in 2020, the brand replaced it with Dream11. Nevertheless, vivo returned as title sponsor in 2021, despite speculation that they were seeking to transfer the rights to a suitable bidder, and the BCCI approved the move.

The upcoming mega auction is set to be two-day affair and will take place in Bengaluru on February 12 and 13. For the unversed, the two new IPL teams will get a chance to pick three players each from the non-retained list before the action in the mega auction.

The likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, Hardik and Krunal Pandya, Yuzvendra Chahal, Shikhar Dhawan, Suresh Raina, Kagiso Rabada, Rashid Khan, David Warner and many other top names haven’t been retained by their respective franchises. Hence, the mega auction is keenly awaited among IPL loyalists all around the globe.
