Earlier, consecutive hattricks by Pat Cummins helped Australia restrict Afghanistan to 148/6 in 20 overs in their T20 World Cup 2024, Super 8 match.

Asked to bat first, Afghanistan got a brilliant start as their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran stitched an 118-run partnership. Gurbaz scored 60 off 49 balls while Zadran smashed 51 off 48 balls. However, Australia bounced back in style and controlled the run flow. Apart from Cummins, Adam Zampa scalped two wickets while Marcus Stoinis took one wicket.

Pat Cummins took his second hat-trick in two matches but Australia paid the price for some sloppy fielding, including missed catches. The 2021 champions were still confident of chasing their target, as long as they lost at least three wickets before getting out of the Powerplay.

Glenn Maxwell has broken Afghanistan’s hearts a couple of times in the past in the World Cup and threatened to do the same again until he was dismissed for 59 runs. Gulbadin Naib finished with 4-20 and the Man of the Match award, while Naveen-ul-Haq took 3-20 as Australia were bowled out for 127 runs in their last over to leave their T20 World Cup campaign on the ropes.
