Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar recently discussed the prospect of appointing an all-format captain for the Indian cricket team following Rohit Sharma’s tenure.

India is advancing to the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2024. Team India will face Afghanistan in its first super 8 match on June 20 at Kensington Oval, Barbados. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar recently discussed the prospect of appointing an all-format captain for the Indian cricket team following Rohit Sharma’s tenure. Manjrekar acknowledged that in recent years, the BCCI has often appointed different captains for T20Is, ODIs, and Test matches when Rohit Sharma was unavailable.

Speaking in a video, Manjrekar highlighted the fact that even when India has Rohit leading the team in all formats, there are different captains to play the role in Rohit’s absence. The likes of Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jasprit Bumrah have been tasked with leading the team when Rohit is not in the squad on many occasions.

“Even though Rohit Sharma has led India in three formats in major marquee events, India will have different captains in T20Is and ODIs and Test matches when Rohit Sharma is not available in SA (2021-22). That will happen,” he said.

“But to answer your question, if there is a walk-in with leadership skills in all three formats, I think Jasprit Bumrah is an example but I don’t see one player playing every international match in a calendar year. So we have different captains and like I said if you’re looking at everything now for anybody, I’m not advocating that Bumrah should be the captain for all three formats but if you ask me I think there’s one player, you’re one player, I think one player there.

Bumrah captained the national team only when the pacer returned from injury during the tour of Ireland. Despite not being used as a captain, he continues to be an indispensable asset to the Indian team in all formats.
