Pat Cummins flew home after the second Test in Delhi to visit with his mother, who was battling cancer. The pacer was supposed to travel to India before the third Test in Indore, but he chose to stay with his ailing mother, who just died away.

In the team, Pat Cummins won’t be replaced, leaving Australia with 15 players to pick from for the three-match series, which gets underway on Friday in Mumbai. Before this, Nathan Ellis was called up to replace Jhye Richardson, who had a recurrence of his hamstring injury.

With Steve Smith leading the team, Australia will have had four different captains in their last five ODIs. During the September series against New Zealand, Aaron Finch announced his retirement, and Pat Cummins was appointed as his replacement. Josh Hazlewood filled the position, though, when he was rested for the second game of the series against England in November.

Due to his Achilles injury, which prevented him from participating in the Test series, Hazlewood was not a viable choice on this occasion. Smith has led Australia in 51 ODIs as captain. Steve Smith will skipper Australia in the second ODI against India. Head coach Andrew McDonald has confirmed that Pat Cummins has opted to stay home following the demise of his mother.

We’ve got a couple conversations around the balance of the team we want to play, we’ve gone in with a structure with eight batters to bat a little bit deeper, we’ve tried that. So there’ll be a mix of combinations as we lead into the World Cup. There are a lot of all rounders picked in the squad and can they all play in the one team.
