According to former New Zealand Cricket president Martin Snedden, a discussion paper was presented at the ICC's annual meeting in Durban last year, in which optimization of the one-day format was the focus.

According to former New Zealand Cricket president Martin Snedden, a discussion paper was presented at the ICC’s annual meeting in Durban last year, in which optimization of the one-day format was the focus, reports InsideSport. During the meeting, a proposal was made to shorten the 50-over matches to 40-overs as the latter was attracting less audience, the report added.

The proposal paper claims that matches should be played in 40-over format in an attempt to revive interest among cricket enthusiasts in the ODI format. According to the report, the ICC ‘rolled their eyes’ and neglected to pay any attention to the proposal presented.

In the discussion, it was mentioned how cricket fans are showing less interest in ODI matches as T20, a shorter format of the game, gains popularity. Earlier this month, former Australian cricket team captain Aaron Finch supported changing ODI matches from 50-overs to 40-overs.

“I think the game is too long in my opinion. In England, they had the Pro-40 and it was a big competition. The pace at which teams bowl their 50 overs is very slow, down to around 11 or 12 overs/hour, which is unacceptable. Maybe people will argue that it’s a glorified T20 game but it’s about the crowd,” Finch told ESPNcricinfo.
