With this victory, both theIndian men’s and women’s hockey teams have won gold medals at the Asian Games, earning direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. The triumph also marked India’s 21st gold medal at the Games, helping the nation climb to fourth place in the overall medal standings.
The victory created history as it was the first time that both the Indian men’s and women’s hockey teams won gold medals at the same Asian Games. It also marked another historic achievement for the men’s team, as they successfully defended their Asian Games title by winning back-to-back gold medals for the first time.
India had previously won the gold medal at the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games. India began the gold medal match on an attacking note and took the lead in the 11th minute, when captain Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner with a powerful drag flick to make it 1-0.
Malaysia responded quickly, with Shelo Silverius scoring an impressive field goal just three minutes later to level the score at 1-1. The Malaysian side attempted to build pressure in the second quarter, but India regained the lead in the 23rd minute when Jugraj Singh successfully converted a penalty corner, giving India a 2-1 advantage.
The score remained unchanged for the rest of the second quarter as both teams headed into halftime with India in front.
