Former Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, three-term MLA, one-term MLC and 3-time Member of Parliament. BJP leader DB Chandra Gowda (87) passed away.

Karnataka former speaker, former minister, BJP leader DB Chandra Gowda (87) passed away. Chandra Gowda passed away due to illness. Chandra Gowda was a senior politician of the state who served as MLA, MP and Minister. He died in Dasarahalli of Mudigere Taluk.

Daradahalli Bairegowda Chandragowda was born on 26th August, 1936. Former Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assembly, three-term MLA, one-term MLC and 3-time Member of Parliament. He represented several political parties in his long political career as Leader of Opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs in the government of Karnataka.

Belonged to Praja Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal, Congress and Bharatiya Janata Party. Born on 26 August 1936 to DA Byregowda and Puttamma in Daradahalli, Moodigere taluk, Chikkamagaluru district, Karnataka, he completed his B.Sc. in Renukacharya College, Bengaluru and Completed LL.B. in RL Law College Belagavi.

Married Purna Chandra Gowda on 22 May 1966. He was in Praja Socialist Party till 1967. In 1971, he was elected to the 5th Lok Sabha from Chikmagalur constituency representing the INC Congress party. He was re-elected to the 6th Lok Sabha from Chikmagalur, but later vacated his seat to allow Indira Gandhi to contest and win elections from there.

He became a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly between 1978 and 1983 and worked as a Cabinet Minister in the government of Karnataka from 1979 to 1980. In 1980 he resigned from the Congress and joined the Karnataka Kranti Ranga, becoming the president of the Karnataka State Congress (U) and served as Leader of opposition in the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1980 to 1981.

He was elected MLA from Shivamogga Constituency, represented Tirthahalli Constituency in 1983 and served as Speaker in Legislative Assembly from 1983 to 1985. In 1986, he was elected to the Rajya Sabha representing the Janata Dal political party. He became an MLA again in 1989. He was the Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs till 2004, representing the Sringeri constituency.

In 2008, he resigned from the Congress and joined the BJP; Subsequently, he became an MP in the 15th Lok Sabha representing Bengaluru North in 2009 from the BJP. In 2011, she entered the silver screen by acting in the Kannada film Nanna Gopala, produced and directed by the writer “Laxman”.
