Wrestlers Hunger Strike: Heavy security near India Gate

Protesting wrestlers will not be allowed to protest at India Gate as the national monument is not a site for demonstrations. Heavy security was deployed near India Gate in the national capital on Wednesday ahead of a Wrestlers hunger strike called by the protesting wrestlers against WFI chief Brij Bhushan Singh who is facing sexual harassment charges.

The police will suggest alternative places for their dharna, the report said two days after cops removed the wrestlers from Jantar Mantar after they tried to march towards Parliament on Sunday.  After being evicted from Janta Mantar on May 28, the top wrestlers said they will continue their protest and go on a hunger strike until death at India Gate.

However, Delhi Police assured that the wrestlers will not be allowed to protest at India Gate as it is a ‘national monument, not a site for demonstrations’. The wrestlers on Tuesday reached Haridwar in an attempt to immerse their medals in the river Ganga as a mark of protest. But, soon farmer leader Naresh Tikait appeared on the scene and requested the wrestlers to not immerse the medals.

While taking away the medals from the wrestlers, Naresh Tikait sought a five-day time from the protesting wrestlers. Reacting to wrestlers’ protest in Haridwar, the WFI chief said that instead of immersing their medals in the Ganga river, the wrestlers chose to give it to Naresh Tikait.

He added that he cannot do anything in the matter and the Delhi Police is conducting the probe, in case anybody is found wrong, arrests will also take place. On Sunday, Delhi Police clamped down the protests while it was en route to the location of the inauguration of the new Parliament building. Sakshi Malik, Bajrang Punia along with Vinesh Phogat and Sangeeta Phogat were even detained by cops.
