To make liquefied petroleum Gas (LPG), a clean cooking fuel available to rural and deprived poor families, the government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana (PMUY) in May 2016 to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from poor families.

While the connection was provided free, the beneficiaries had to buy LPG refills at the market price. As fuel prices skyrocketed, the government provided a subsidy of Rs 200 per cylinder to PMUY beneficiaries in May 2022. It was raised to Rs 300 in October 2023.
