New Delhi: A snow avalanche has hit the popular hill station of Sonamarg in Jammu and Kashmir today. No casualties have been reported so far. The IMD on Wednesday predicted that Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh and Himachal Pradesh will experience “light/moderate fairly widespread to widespread rainfall/snowfall” on January 12 and 13.Last year in November, three Army personnel were killed after an avalanche struck them in the Machil sector of Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said the avalanche occurred in Sarbal area of Neelgrath.

Hyderabad-based Megha Engineering and Infrastructure Limited (MEIL) is working on the Zojila tunnel in the area. The body of one of the three workers was recovered from the avalanche site and shifted to a nearby hospital. Rescue operation is underway by teams of Police, SDRF, Army, Beacons and MEIL. Clearing the snow-filled area at the site of the avalanche.

Ambulance and medical teams are also on the spot. The mountains, which are usually covered with white snow, are a special attraction for tourists. But sometimes such dangerous incidents happen, officials said.
