Over 40 made in India cough syrups failed quality test: Report reveals

This has been investigated in the wake of the deaths of children in Gambia and Uzbekistan who consumed many cough syrups manufactured in India.

Syrups of 40 companies manufacturing cough medicine in the country have failed the quality test. Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), which has given a report on this, has received reports that cough syrups made in India have caused the deaths of 141 children globally.

This has been investigated in the wake of the deaths of children in Gambia and Uzbekistan who consumed many cough syrups manufactured in India.

And against this background, the drugs being produced in different states of the country have been tested in the laboratory. In which these failed to qualify. The Central Drug Standard Control Organization (CDSCO) has released this report, which has evaluated 1,105 drugs. Out of which 59 samples were declared substandard.

In November, it released a report under the list of drugs, medical devices and cosmetics. In which products are declared to be of substandard quality or adulterated or misbranded. This data is obtained from a government testing laboratory.

No products were found to be adulterated or misbranded in this report. Many cough syrups manufactured in India are sold in the global market and there have been reports of deaths among those who consumed them.

In this background, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said it is mandatory to get government approval on the quality of cough syrups being exported. CDSCE is conducting testing of all cough syrups receiving export permission against DGFT directive.

Drugs responsible for child deaths: Gambia and Uzbekistan 18 children died in Uzbekistan after consuming Noida-based pharmaceutical firm Marian Biotech’s cough syrup Doc-1. In Iraq, the condition of children who consumed cough syrup made by a Maharashtra pharmaceutical company became serious. The World Health Organization also expressed concern about this and issued a global warning not to use these chemicals.
