As north India continues to reel under an extreme heat wave, at least 98 people have died in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh due to severe heat in the last three days. IMD issues red alert till Monday after 90 people dead for severe heat wave.

While 54 people have died in Uttar Pradesh, 44 people have lost their lives due to the extremely hot weather in Bihar. At least 54 people admitted to a district hospital in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia died between June 15, 16 and 17 as the state swelters under severe heat.

At least 400 people were admitted to a district hospital in Ballia in the last three days with complaints of fever, breathlessness and other health complications, an official said. There are different reasons for the deaths, of which, severe heat could be one factor, said doctors, adding that hospitalizations are rising due to severe heat conditions in the district.

Apart from Uttar Pradesh, as many as 44 people have also lost their lives due to extremely hot weather in Bihar in the past 24 hours. Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted severe to very severe heatwave conditions in Odisha, Vidarbha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, etc.

A red alert warning has been issued in Bihar due to prevailing heatwave conditions in the state, said IMD in its daily heatwave guidance issued on Friday. In the wake of the scorching temperature, the Patna district administration has extended the summer vacation of schools up to Class 12 till 24 June.

Other than Bihar, several states have extended summer vacation in their states due to the scorching summer. Jharkhand’s School Education and Literacy Department extended closure of schools up to class 8 till 17 June. Other than this, Chhattisgarh, Goa, Andhra Pradesh, have also announced closure of school for students.

Heatwave to severe heatwave conditions will prevail in pockets over Vidarbha and in a few pockets over Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Bihar, Odisha, and in isolated pockets over Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and heat wave conditions in isolated pockets of Sub-Himalayan West Bengal & Sikkim, Telangana, East Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, the weather office said.
