IMD issued red Alert for these states, heavy Rainfall alert till June 17

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday predicted continuation of heavy rainfall activity over north eastern states till June 17 with a red alert sounded for Assam and Meghalaya. IMD issued red Alert for these states, heavy Rainfall alert till June 17.

Several places in Assam and Meghalaya are already receiving extremely heavy rainfall, above 100 mm, 250 mm or even 300 mm over 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday. Apart from the red alert for Assam and Meghalaya for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, the India Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for Arunachal Pradesh till June 17.

“Moisture incursion is very likely to continue due to strong lower level southerly/south-westerly winds from the Bay of Bengal to Northeast India during June 13 to 17,” said IMD’s senior scientist at Guwahati, Sanjay O’Neill Shaw said. Under its influence, fairly widespread/widespread rainfall accompanied with thunderstorm/lightning/heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places is very likely to continue over northeastern states till June 17.

Chief amounts of rainfall recorded during last 24 hours ending at 8.30 a.m. on Monday include Dhubri 140 mm, Dudhnoi Kvk (AWS) 120 mm, Shella 340 mm, Sohra (RKM) 330 mm, Mawkyrwat (ARG) 330 mm, Sohra 290 mm, Williamnagar 220 mm, Jowai (AWS) 150 mm, Khliehriat 130 mm, and Tikrikilla 100 mm.

The IMD had earlier mentioned that the South West Monsoon will advance into northwest Bay of Bengal, some parts of Odisha, Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, entire Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and some more parts of Bihar during subsequent 2-3 days Heavy Rainfall Alert. The Indian Meteorological department further informed that widespread rainfall with lightning is likely to occur in the Gangetic West Bengal or the southern districts during the next five days.

Widespread thundershowers have been predicted by IMD Heavy Rainfall Alert over northeast India and adjoining Sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim during next 5 days. Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall alert may occur in the sub-Himalayan districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Alipurduar, Cooch Behar and Jalpaiguri. Places in the Dooars region of North Bengal received substantial rainfall in 24 hours till 8.30 AM on Tuesday.

Hasimara recorded the highest amount rainfall at 190 mm, followed by 130 mm each in Diana and Kumargram and 120 mm in Nagrakata, the MeT Department added. The West Bengal government had on Monday extended the summer vacation for students till 26 June in view of the extreme heat wave conditions. However, the schools in the Darjeeling and Kalimpong districts has been exempted from the same.
