Heavy rainfall: issued red alert, school closed

Heavy Rainfall in Uttarakhand and led to landslides, waterlogging and flood-like situations in several districts on Tuesday. Amid heavy rainfall, five roads were closed for vehicular movement. Amid a heavy rain alert for Wednesday, schools from Class 1 to 12 and all Anganwadi centres will remain closed in Bageshwar, Tehri, Pauri, Pithoragarh and Nainital districts.

The roads closed for vehicular movement are – Bageshwar-Dafaut, Song-Khalidhar, Kapkot-Karmi, Shama-Naukuri and Rikhadi-Bachham. The IMD issued a red alert of heavy to very heavy rainfall for July 20 for seven districts — Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar.

“Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at a few places with extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Nainital, Champawat, Udham Singh Nagar and Haridwar districts of Uttarakhand,” the IMD said. The impact could be in the form of medium to major landslides and rock falls at isolated places in vulnerable areas, resulting in blocking/washout of highways/link roads, the IMD alert stated.

The MeT also alerted people residing near the rivulets/streams to remain on alert and advised them to avoid travelling as far as possible. Several platoons of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in all affected areas to carry out rescue and relief operations.

With the shifting of the monsoon trough northwards, widespread and heavy rainfall is expected over northwest India and the Himalayan foothills during the next 4 days, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Wednesday. A cyclonic circulation is lying over West Madhya Pradesh and neighbourhood areas in lower tropospheric levels.

The monsoon trough is near its normal position and very likely to continue to shift further northwards during the next 2-3 days. An east-west shear zone is running across north Peninsular India. An off-shore trough is running from south Gujarat coast to Karnataka coast.

Under the influence of above systems, fairly widespread to widespread light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy rain and thunderstorm or lightning is very likely over Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Rajasthan & Uttar Pradesh during July 20 to 24.
