Heavy Rainfall Alert in these states for next 4 days

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast some intense wet weather across the South Indian states for the remainder of this week. These conditions will be caused by two systems westerly winds along the west coast and a trough extending from South Interior Karnataka to the Comorin area. Since the arrival of southwest monsoon over the country, various parts of India have been freed from the scorching conditions and are enjoying widespread rainfall. However, with a weak monsoon phase on-going over Southern India, the rainfall activity over the region has remained dull.

But now, a minor change appears to be on the horizon, as the Owing to their collective influence, Heavy Rainfall Alert accompanied by thunderstorms are possible over Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and South Interior Karnataka. Scattered rains may also drench North Karnataka.

As per report daily rainfall of 20-30 mm is likely to continue across Kerala for several days, while active rain will expand northward into Coastal Karnataka this weekend. Heavy Rainfall Alert in Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Kerala, South Interior Karnataka for the next five days, until Monday (June 20). Telangana between Thursday to Friday, June 16-17.

India Meteorological Department Heavy Rainfall Alert in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal during Thursday to Saturday, June 16-18. Coastal Karnataka from Thursday to Sunday, June 16-19. Accordingly, a yellow watch has been placed on Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Telangana until Monday, June 20, and Tamil Nadu until Saturday, June 18, so as to urge the locals to be updated about the inclement weather.

As for district-level alerts, almost all districts in the aforementioned states, especially Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Andhra, will remain on yellow watch until Saturday, June 18. But Andhra’s Kurnool and YSR Kadapa districts will be on orange alert this Thursday, so individuals can be prepared for the heavy rains, thunderstorms and lightning.

Except for the northeastern states, most other parts of India have been experiencing a ‘dry’ monsoon so far. Even most South Indian states have witnessed deficient rainfall since the beginning of the rainy season. Between June 1 and 15, Tamil Nadu (28.7 mm) has seen normal rains, recording just 1% lesser rainfall than average.

However, weather report says Karnataka (60 mm), Andhra (37 mm) and Telangana (33 mm) have registered ‘deficits’ worth 32%, 21% and 40% respectively. And Kerala has been the worst of all, recording a mere 121 mm when the normal for this period is 303 mm — showing a ‘large deficit’ of 60%!.
