What is Fried Rice Syndrome?

According to the American Journal of Biomedical Science and Research, ‘Fried Rice Syndrome’ is a foodborne illness. When cooked food is left at room temperature for too long, bacteria called Bacillus cereus can form and cause food poisoning. These bacteria produce toxins. Consuming such contaminated food causes problems like vomiting and dysentery. Death may also occur.

These bacteria are found in small amounts in most foods. It is more common in certain foods that are not stored properly. Carbohydrates such as rice and pasta are prone to spoilage if stored for long periods of time. Non-veg and other curries are prone to problems if stored for a long time and heated. These bacteria produce two types of toxins. Acid-labile enterotoxin, emetic releases toxins. Heating food releases toxic chemicals.

Fried Rice Syndrome Symptoms:

An attack by Bacillus cereus bacteria causes symptoms such as vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. These symptoms usually subside after 24 hours. Otherwise consult a doctor immediately.
