EPF Claim: Those who have lost an earning member due to the novel coronavirus should remember to file the claim for money lying in the deceased person’s Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF), Employees’ Pension Scheme (EPS) and Employees’ Deposit Linked Insurance Scheme (EDLI) accounts. Here is how nominees can file a claim for money in a deceased person’s EPF, EPS and EDLI schemes’ accounts online. The central government has designed the EPF scheme for the post-retirement life security of the employees. Originally it was a scheme started for workers working in industries.

Later EPF scheme was extended to all employees. There is a mandatory rule that companies having at least 20 employees should provide EPF facility to their employees.  When an employee changes job, a different EPF account is started, but they can be merged and continued. The EPF scheme is applicable till the employee retires.

If the employee dies before retirement, the nominee can get the money in his EPF account. For that the employee has to name a nominee for his EPF account. Here are the details on how a nominee can claim EPF money.

Step to claim nominee for EPF money:

– Form 20 should be submitted by the nominee for the deceased EPF member’s account.

– EPF member details should be filled in this.

– Nominee should enter the mobile number provided in his Aadhaar in this application

– The nominee has to submit this application through the organization where the EPF member was working at the time of death.

– After this, if the application is accepted, an SMS message will be sent to the mobile number of the nominee.

– The money will be credited to the nominee’s bank account.

What documents are required to claim nominee for EPF money:

– Death certificate of EPF member

– Guardianship Certificate

– Nominee’s cancelled cheque

– Form 5 (If availing benefit under Employees’ Deposit Based Insurance Scheme)

– Form 10D (for pension facility)

– Form 10C (For Withdrawal Benefit).
