Cyclone Michaung: Heavy Rainfall Alert in these states announced school holiday

Other places in Tamil Nadu including Chengalpet, Kancheepuram and Thiruvallur are expected to receive heavy rainfall. Heavy rains have resulted in waterlogging near several metro stations across Chennai. 4 feet of water has accumulated at the St. Thomas Metro station and access to the station has been blocked.

Passengers were advised to board the metro train at Alandur. Although flooded, metro services usually started at 5 am. Passengers are advised to plan their journey accordingly. The Greater Chennai Corporation asked people to stay indoors and not go out unless necessary as several roads were flooded.

Cyclone Michaung, over southwest Bay of Bengal, was moving north-northwest at a speed of 8 kmph during the last six hours. It is centered about 230 kilometers east-northeast of Puducherry, 190 kilometers east-southeast of Chennai, 310 kilometers south-east of Nellore, 410 kilometers south-southeast of Bapatla and 430 kilometers south-southeast of Machalipatnam.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the cyclone is likely to move in a north-northwest direction, intensify further and reach the west-central Bay of Bengal off the coast of south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu by early Monday morning.

It will then move northward almost parallel to and near the coast of South Andhra Pradesh and become a severe cyclonic storm crossing the coast of South Andhra Pradesh between Nellore and Machalipatnam in the early morning of December 5 (Tuesday). In an official announcement by the government, 121 multi-purpose centers and 4,967 relief camps with all basic amenities have been prepared in the northern and other coastal areas of the state, excluding Cauvery delta areas.

Chief Secretaries of Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Puducherry and Special Chief Secretary, Revenue and Disaster Management, Andhra Pradesh briefed the NCMC about the preparatory steps being taken. The committee was informed that low-lying areas have been identified and evacuation of people to relief centers has started.
