Cyclone Biparjoy: issued orange alert; schools closed in these area

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch coasts as cyclone Biparjoy has intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and is expected to impact the state and Pakistan in the coming days. Cyclone Biparjoy: orange alert in these places; schools closed in coastal area.

“Cyclone Alert for Saurashtra & Kutch Coast: Orange Message. ESCS BIPARJOY at 0530IST of today over Aeast central & adjoining NE Arabian Sea near lat 19.2N & long 67.7E, about 380km SSW of Devbhumi Dwarka. To cross near Jakhau Port, Gujarat by noon of June 15,” the Department tweeted early Monday morning.

Cyclone Biparjoy has intensified into a severe cyclonic storm over the east-central Arabian Sea as it moves northwards at 5 kmph, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The cyclonic storm is centered approximately 340 km southwest of Porbandar in Gujarat.

In its latest bulletin on Monday, the weather forecasting agency said the cyclone is expected to cross the Saurashtra and Kutch region and the adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi in Kutch and Karachi by noon on June 15.

The cyclone’s intensification has resulted in high tide waves along the coastal areas of Gujarat and Maharashtra. Several areas including Saurashtra, Devbhumi Dwarka, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Porbandar, and coastal areas of Kutch have closed their schools on Monday.

Officials at Deendayal Port Authority in Kandla started shifting people in the low-lying areas to shelters in Gandhidham, as updated by the Public Relations Officer of Deendayal Port Authority.

KD Lakhani, the DM of Porbander, issued a statement on the preparations for the cyclone and said that the district administration is working alongside the Government and joining hands with various NGOs to prepare for the effects of the storm.
