Cyclone Biparjoy: Heavy Rain, IMD issues red alert in these places

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has asked the Gujarat government to have measures in place to restore necessary services, such as electricity, telecommunication, health and drinking water, in case of damage. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Saurashtra and Kutch coasts as cyclone Biparjoy is expected to make landfall in Gujarat and southern parts of Pakistan Thursday evening. On landfall, a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 km (78-84 miles) per hour is expected, gusting up to 150 km per hour.

IMD has issued alert for nine states and union territories (UTs) in India, these include include Gujarat, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Goa, Daman & Diu, Lakshadweep, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. Heavy rainfall is expected in these areas from June 14-15. Cyclone Biporjoy is expected to cross near Porbandar and Dwarka coasts of Gujarat today.

As cyclone Biparjoy barrels towards the Kutch coast in Gujarat, the government said they have so far evacuated nearly 37,800 people living near the sea in eight districts of the state. Cyclone Biparjoy has turned from extreme to a ‘very severe’ cyclonic storm and will cross the Jakhau Port in Gujarat by Thursday evening, the IMD said.

Ahead of Gujarat’s Saurashtra and Kutch regions and adjoining Pakistan coasts, schools have been shut for two days in Kutch, Porbandar, Amreli, Gir Somnath, Dwarka- the five most-affected districts in Gujarat. Gujarat CM Bhupendra Patel will visit the emergency service control room at 10 am on Wednesday to take stock of the situation.

The cabinet meeting of the Gujarat government which was scheduled to take place today has been called off and all the ministers have been asked to remain in their respective constituencies. As many as 17 National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and 12 State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams are on alert mode in Gujarat, out of which four teams have been deployed in Kutch, 3 in Dwarka and Rajkot, 2 in Jamnagar and 1 in Porbandar.
