Cyclone Biparjoy: Alert in these states including Gujarat, Karnataka

Cyclone Biparjoy was likely to make landfall near Jakhau port in Gujarat’s Kutch district on Thursday afternoon as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ with maximum wind speed reaching up to 150 kilometres per hour, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Monday. In its latest Weather Report, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the extremely severe cyclonic storm was very likely to move north-northeast and cross Saurashtra and Kutch and adjoining Pakistan coasts between Mandvi (Gujarat) and Karachi (Pakistan) by the June 15 noon as a ‘very severe cyclonic storm’ with maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 kilometres per hours (kmph) gusting to 150 kmph.

The southwest monsoon has further advanced into some more parts of central Arabian Sea, south of Maharashtra, interior Karnataka, most parts of Tamil Nadu, and most parts of NE India. Conditions are favorable for further advance of Southwest Monsoon into some more parts of Maharashtra, the rest of Karnataka, southern Andhra Pradesh, and the rest of NE India during the next 24-48 hours.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a review meeting on Cyclone Biparjoy which is likely to hit the Kutch region of Gujarat on Thursday. The meeting was attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Principal Secretary to Prime Minister P K Mishra, Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Earth Sciences Secretary M Ravichandran, Kamal Kishore, Member National Disaster Management Authority, India, Meteorological Department Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, among others.

Widespread rain and thunderstorms are very likely over the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, NE India, Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Goa and Lakshadweep. Heavy rain is possible at isolated places of Assam and Meghalaya. Scattered rain with isolated thunderstorms are in the books over Gangetic West Bengal, Bihar, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu.

Snow may mix in high elevation areas of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh during this time. Isolated rain is likely over Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana, with a chance of lightning.

Max temperatures of 40°C or more are possible over West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan.
