Tamil Nadu: Rs 4,508.23 crore allocated to provide free electricity for farmers

Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government has decided to allocate Rs 4,508.23 crore to provide free electricity to farmers, said Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare MRK Panneerselvam. In a first, the Tamil Nadu government presented a separate agriculture budget on Saturday.

This comes a day after the revised state budget for the year 2021-22 was presented by Finance Minister PTR Palaivel Thiagarajan. The agriculture budget was presented by Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare MRK Panneerselvam. For the first time in the history of the Tamil Nadu Assembly, a paperless budget was presented. The Agriculture minister announced several measures for the welfare of farmers including allocating Rs 2,327 crore for the ongoing implementation of the crop insurance scheme in 2021-22 and setting up a separate division in the agriculture department for organic farming. According to the budget presented by the Tamil Nadu Finance Minister, the overall revenue expenditure is expected to be Rs 2,61,188.57 crore. During the main budget presented on Friday, petrol prices were slashed by Rs 3 per litre on the directions of Chief Minister MK Stalin. The decision is expected to cost Rs 1,160 crore to the state exchequer.
