History and Significance

According to Hindu mythology, Krishna, the human incarnation of Vishnu, was born on this day to destroy the demon king of Mathura, Kamsa, the brother of Devaki, Krishna’s virtuous mother. Krishna was born in Mathura on the eighth day (Ashtami) of the month of Bhadrapada (August-September) in Mathura as the son of Devaki and Vasudeva.

When Krishna was born, Mathura was ruled by his father-in-law King Kamsa, who was killing the children born to his sister Devaki on the pretext of death to me. He prophesied that Kamsa, the eighth son of the couple Devaki and Vasudeva, would bring about his downfall. After the prophecy, Kamsa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and killed their first six children.

During the birth of their seventh child Balaram, the embryo was mystically transferred from Devaki’s womb to Princess Rohini. When their eighth child Krishna was born, the entire palace was asleep and Vasudeva left the child at Nandababa and Yashodhe’s house in Vrindavan, taking Yashodhe’s child with him.

Vasudeva returned to the palace with a baby girl and handed over the baby to Kamsa. When the evil king tried to kill the child, she transformed into Durga, warning him of his impending doom. Thus, Krishna grew up in Vrindavan and then killed his father-in-law Kamsa.
