First monkey disease of the year detected in Chikkamagaluru

A person from Balehonnur was suffering from fever and was sent to TIST by the health department. Kasanur forest disease, or forest disease (KFD), was first discovered in 1957 in the Kasanur forest area of Shimoga in our hill country. It is an annual disease that usually occurs in montane forest areas. The disease is caused by a virus belonging to the Flaviviridae family. Since the virus was first discovered in monkeys, it is known as monkey disease.

It is said that this disease is spread by blood-sucking insects like bees, fleas, wasps, mosquitoes etc. If the virus infects animals like monkeys, hyenas etc. in forest areas, there is a possibility that it can easily spread to other animals through honey, fleas etc. An insect called the red flea spreads KFA very rapidly.
