India records over 30,000 COVID-19 cases in a day for first time; Total cases close to a million mark

New Delhi: India on Thursday recorded its biggest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases yet, taking the country’s close to a million mark.

India added 32, 695 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 9,68,876, including active cases at 3,31,146, and total recoveries at 6,12,814. The country added 606 more fatalities in the last 24 hours, taking the overall death toll to 24,915.

During the last 24 hours, the number of active cases rose by 11,306 In 24 hours, while the overall recoveries increased by 20,783. India’s recovery rate has improved to 63.25 percent.  Maharashtra added 7,975 new cases to the tally, followed by Tamil Nadu 4,496, Karnataka 3,176, Andhra Pradesh 2,432, Uttar Pradesh 1,659, Delhi 1,647, Telangana 1,597, West Bengal 1,589 and Bihar 1,328 contributing to around 80% of the single-day spike.

It took 110 days for the COVID-19 cases in the country to reach one lakh and just 56 days more to go past the nine-lakh mark. Only US and Brazil have more COVID-19 cases than India in the world.
