Heavy rains continue to coastal Karnataka’s Udupi, Mangaluru District, 3 fishing boats capsize in Udupi

Udupi: Continuous downpour since Friday in the coast has thrown normal life in Udupi out of gear, with all low-lying areas under six feet of water.

Houses, temples, especially the Sri Krishna Mutt premises, fields, shops and establishments and vehicles were inundated.Three fishing boats in Malpe area in Udupi district had capsized. However, 12 fishermen in them swam to safety. In addition, two more fishing boats were damaged in the same area.

Several people were stranded in houses in Malpe, Bairampally, Heranje, Kukkehalli, Sasthana, Kota, and Kundapura Taluk in Udupi district as flood water entered the houses in those areas. The district administration is in the process of evacuating the stranded people, the minister said.

The rain also left a trail of destruction in Udupi as well as Mangaluru and the loss is estimated in excess of several crores. This type of destruction due to the rain is said to be happening in Udupi after decades.
