Compulsory marriage registration in Grama Panchayat from now

Now, Marriage Certificates can be obtained at local Gram Panchayats and an order to this effect has been officially issued by the State Government. Compulsory marriage registration in Grama Panchayat from now.

An important measure to prevent “child marriage” in the state, From now on, compulsory marriage registration will be authorized for Grama Panchayat. The Commission for Protection of Child Rights has taken important steps to prevent child marriage and has recommended the state government to entrust the power of compulsory registration of marriages to Grama Panchayat.

As child marriages are increasing in the state, the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights has recommended to the state government that marriage registration should be brought under the jurisdiction of Grama Panchayat to prevent child marriages.

Gram Panchayats should be empowered to register marriages to facilitate the people of rural areas.. It is said that the Commission for Protection of Child Rights has said that registration should be made compulsory by fixing the fee Rs. 250.

Till now, marriage registrations were done at the Sub-Registrar Offices. The couple used to register their marriage at the Sub-Registrar Office in the limits of their residences or the place they got married by obtaining relevant applications from the office or downloading the same from the respective website.

After filling the form, three friends or relatives were required to sign as witnesses along with the signatures of the married couple after which the Sub-Registrar used to give his approval by signing the application form along with the office seal. Now, the Government has given the same authority to PDOs of the respective Gram Panchayats.
