6,017 birds, mostly ducks, were killed on Saturday in Vechuru, Neendur and Arpukara panchayats of Kottayam district.Kottayam district administration has given information about this. According to official data, around 133 ducks and 156 chickens died in Vechur, 2,753 ducks in Nindur and 2,975 ducks in Arpookar, PTI reported.

The Lakshadweep administration has now banned the shipment of poultry to the islands due to the outbreak of bird flu in Kerala. Early this morning, the farmers went down to the ponds and caught the ducks and took them to the designated area for slaughter and handed over the ducks to the health authorities.

Bird flu was reported in Alappuzha district of Kerala state in late October this year. An operation was conducted to prevent the spread of the disease in Haripadu Municipality. In India, bird flu mainly occurs during the winter months between September and March. In this case, the disease is spread by migratory birds coming into the country.
