Fake tribute post targeting BJP MLA Bhagirathi Murulya goes viral in Dakshina Kannada
Mangaluru: A controversial fake tribute post targeting BJP MLA Bhagirathi Murulya of Sulya constituency has gone viral on social media, sparking outrage across Dakshina Kannada. The post comes in the wake of a widely discussed incident in Hubballi where a BJP worker was allegedly assaulted.
The post, shared on a Facebook account under the name Billava Sandesh, falsely claimed to pay respects to the MLA in a highly derogatory manner. It read: “Dalit community MLA Bhagirathi Murulya did not stand for the oppressed Dalit community and today left everyone. We offer our heartfelt tribute and pray that God gives the strength to BJP workers to respond to her departure.”
The inflammatory content led to widespread calls for action, prompting the Dakshina Kannada BJP Mahila Morcha to file a complaint with the District SP. Police have registered a case under Sections 352 and BSS against the accused, identified as Sandesh alias Seetharam, at Bantwal Rural Police Station. Investigations are currently underway.
Political and social backlash
BJP leaders have strongly condemned the post, labeling it as an insult to a legislator committed to public service and representing a marginalized community. State BJP General Secretary and MP K. Brijesh Chowta remarked, “MLA Bhagirathi Murulya comes from a socially disadvantaged background and has been dedicated to public service. Posting derogatory content against her on social media is unacceptable and must be dealt with strictly.”
The incident adds to an already tense political environment in the state following the Hubballi attack on a BJP worker, which continues to dominate public discourse. BJP leaders have urged swift legal action against the individual behind the fake post to prevent further misuse of social media for defaming public representatives.
Police sources confirmed that the investigation will include tracking the origin of the post, examining related social media activity, and questioning witnesses to identify any accomplices. Authorities have also cautioned the public against sharing or forwarding such content that can incite unrest.
The MLA, known for her community work and advocacy for marginalized groups, has not personally commented on the post but party leaders have pledged full support to ensure her reputation is protected.
