Bengaluru continues to add vehicles at a rapid pace, but there is a noticeable change in what residents are choosing to buy. Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly common across the city, particularly among two wheeler buyers.

Transport department figures show that Bengaluru recorded 76,508 new vehicle registrations in August. Of these, 13,389 were electric vehicles, meaning electric models accounted for around 17.5 percent of all new registrations during the month.

The city is also responsible for a large share of Karnataka’s electric vehicle registrations. The state recorded 26,636 new electric vehicles in August, while Bengaluru alone accounted for 13,389 registrations. This means roughly one out of every two electric vehicles registered in the state during the month was registered in Bengaluru.

The growth becomes more significant when viewed over a longer period. Karnataka currently has around 8.9 lakh electric vehicles, and more than 4.9 lakh of them are in Bengaluru. The city therefore remains the biggest electric vehicle market in the state.

Bengaluru is already dealing with a huge and growing vehicle population. Around 2,500 to 3,000 new vehicles are being registered in the city every day, while the total number of vehicles, including older and newer models, is estimated at around 1.40 crore.

Despite this rapid increase, demand for electric mobility is also gaining momentum. Daily registrations include around 300 electric scooters and about 40 electric cars, indicating that electric options are moving beyond a niche market.

Two wheelers make up a particularly large portion of the electric vehicle segment. Around 9,453 two wheelers were registered in Bengaluru during the previous month, with electric vehicles making up about 71 percent of those registrations according to the available figures.

The city now has a substantial electric vehicle fleet across several categories. It includes around 3.8 lakh electric scooters and 46,596 electric cars. There are also about 9,922 electric cabs, 6,855 passenger autos, 9,876 goods autos and 2,009 electric buses operating in the city.

The increase in electric vehicle use comes at a time when Bengaluru continues to face challenges linked to traffic and air pollution. A growing vehicle population can add pressure to the city’s roads and contribute to emissions when conventional petrol and diesel vehicles dominate the fleet.

Electric vehicles do not produce tailpipe emissions while being driven, which is one reason their wider adoption is seen as a potential way to reduce pollution from road transport. However, the overall environmental benefit also depends on factors such as electricity generation, vehicle usage and charging infrastructure.

The figures also point to a significant change in consumer interest. Electric scooters have become especially visible on Bengaluru roads, while electric cars, cabs, autos and buses are gradually expanding their presence.

According to the available data, the number of electric vehicles in Bengaluru has increased sharply over the past five years. The growth highlights how quickly electric mobility has developed in the city, even as the overall number of vehicles continues to rise.

With Bengaluru adding thousands of vehicles every day, the continued shift towards electric models could play a role in shaping the city’s future transport pattern. The pace of new electric vehicle registrations will be closely watched as authorities work to address traffic, pollution and the growing demand for cleaner urban mobility.
