Rain has brought some relief to air quality across several Karnataka cities, with Bengaluru and other major urban centres recording relatively comfortable conditions. The recent showers appear to have helped reduce dust and suspended particles in the air, giving residents cleaner conditions in many areas.
Bengaluru has recorded an overall AQI in the range of around 41 to 62, placing different parts of the city in the good to moderate categories. PM10 and PM2.5 particles remain among the main pollutants being monitored.
The difference between neighbourhoods is noticeable. Areas with heavy traffic are showing relatively higher readings, while locations with more greenery are recording cleaner air.
Silk Board and Peenya, which experience substantial vehicle movement during the day, have recorded AQI readings in the range of around 60 to 75. Traffic emissions and road dust can contribute to higher pollution levels in such busy areas.
In comparison, areas such as Lalbagh and Jayanagar have recorded readings closer to 40 to 50. The presence of substantial greenery and comparatively cleaner surroundings can contribute to better local air conditions.
Recent rainfall has played an important role in the changing conditions. Rain can temporarily wash dust and some suspended particles from the atmosphere, particularly after periods of dry weather. This can make the air feel noticeably cleaner for residents.
The improvement is not limited to Bengaluru. Mysuru has recorded AQI levels of around 38 to 45, indicating relatively clean air in the city. The lower readings are a positive sign for residents carrying out their normal outdoor activities.
Mangaluru is also seeing comfortable air conditions. AQI readings there have been reported at around 35 to 42, with the coastal environment, rainfall and air movement contributing to the relatively clean conditions.
Hubballi and Dharwad have recorded AQI levels of around 55 to 65, placing them closer to the moderate range. The readings indicate that air quality remains generally manageable, although conditions can change depending on traffic, weather and local activity.
Belagavi and Kalaburagi have also recorded AQI readings around the 50 to 60 range. These figures indicate that pollution levels remain relatively controlled compared with periods when urban areas experience higher concentrations of particulate matter.
Weather conditions can have a major influence on daily AQI readings. Rainfall, wind speed, temperature and the amount of traffic on roads can all affect the concentration and movement of pollutants. As a result, air quality can vary considerably between different parts of the same city.
For Bengaluru, traffic remains an important factor behind local variations. Areas near busy junctions and major roads can experience higher pollution than neighbourhoods with fewer vehicles and more open or green spaces.
Even when the overall AQI is comfortable, local conditions should not be ignored. People with respiratory sensitivities, older adults and others who are more affected by air pollution can take extra precautions when spending time near heavily congested roads.
At present, the reported air quality across the major cities remains relatively comfortable for most people. There is no indication from the figures provided of a widespread severe pollution episode across the state.
However, residents should remember that AQI can change throughout the day. A single citywide number may not reflect conditions at every location, particularly when traffic levels and weather conditions differ between neighbourhoods.
The recent rain has therefore offered some relief to Karnataka’s urban areas. If the wet weather continues, dust levels may remain under control for some time, although pollution can rise again when rainfall decreases and traffic activity remains high.
For Bengaluru residents, the current AQI readings provide a relatively positive picture compared with days of heavier dust and pollution. The coming weather conditions and traffic levels will determine how long the improvement continues.
