A single member bench of the High Court has cancelled the circular issued by the government for conducting board exams for classes 5, 8, 9 and 11.

Karnataka: A single member bench of the High Court has cancelled the circular issued by the government for conducting board exams for classes 5, 8, 9 and 11. The order was issued by Justice Ravi Hosmanaja and it is a setback for the government.

In December 2023, the RUPSA organization had moved the court challenging the circulars issued by the state government. The High Court heard the argument and ordered the cancellation of the government circular. Advocate Sudarshan argued for the petitioner.

RUPSA-aided private schools organisation had argued in court that the state government’s order was against the norms of continuous and comprehensive evaluation (CCE). After hearing the arguments, the court ruled in favor of RUPSA. The board exams of classes 5, 8, 9 have been cancelled.

The exams are going to start from next week and this order of the High Court has caused confusion among the education department officials. Lokesh Talikatte, president of the Karnataka Federation of RUPSA Aided Private Schools, welcomed the High Court order. And he said the state government’s order violated the CCE norms followed by the educational institutions.

Karnataka Government has announced to conduct three board exams for SSLC and Secondary PUC students to ensure that students score well. It said that the best results will be considered for the mark sheet. But this is being opposed.

Karnataka is facing a drought situation in 2023-24 due to lack of rain in the monsoon season. The government has already announced drought-affected taluks. In drought-prone taluks, mid-day meals are provided to government school children even during summer vacations.

Sindhu B. Rupesh, Director of PM Poshan, School Education Department, Bangalore has given information through a memorandum. He instructed that preparations should be made to provide midday meals to the children.

In the background of the factors described in the Karnataka government’s proposal, 223 taluks of 236 taluks of 31 districts of the state are affected by drought in the monsoon season of 2023 as per the report of the crop damage survey by the district commissioners as per the criteria in the central government’s drought management manual 2020 drought declaration guidelines. The government has announced the taluks and said it will come into effect with immediate effect.
