Dakshina Kannada Udupi district: zero enrolment in 55 government schools

A month has passed since the beginning of the academic year 2023-24. School doors are open and children are going to school after summer vacation. New children are enrolling in schools. Dakshina Kannada Udupi district: zero enrolment in 55 government schools.

But in many government primary schools of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts, it is surprising that 55 government schools record zero enrolment in first standard. Yes, the Public Education Department has informed that no student is enrolled in first standard in 55 government primary schools in the two districts.

24 schools in Dakshina Kannada have zero enrolment in first standard. Two in Puttur Taluk, four in Bantwala, three in Beltangadi, two in Mangaluru North, two in Mangaluru South, three in Mudubidiri and eight in Sulya Taluk have zero enrolment.

31 schools in Udupi district have zero enrolment for class one. Four in Udupi, four in Brahmavara, five in Kundapur, nine in Byndur and nine in Karkala taluk have zero children enrolled in first class. Udupi district education department officials said that the rise in private English medium schools with good infrastructure and transport facilities has adversely affected admissions in government schools.

According to the Public Accounts Committee report submitted to the Legislative Council in December 2022, the ‘Rashtriya Madyamika Siksha Abhiyana’ (RMSA) said that enrolment in private schools has increased by 335 per cent in the last 13 years, while enrolment in government schools has increased by only 30 per cent.
