The Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE, has issued a notice stating that schools cannot start the new academic year before April 1. As it leaves little time for children to pursue extracurricular activities. The board said some schools have started their academic session early this year. “Attempting to complete an entire year’s worth of I coursework in a reduced timeframe poses risks for students who may get overwhelmed and struggle to keep up with the pace of the learning, leading to anxiety and burnout,” the board said in the circular. A circular from the board issued on March 17 stated.

“Furthermore, it leaves little or no time for extracurricular activities which are just as important as academics,” the board has said in its circular. The circular tells principals and heads of institutions ‘to refrain from beginning academic sessions before April 1 every year and to strictly follow the academic sessions from April 1 to March 31’. Sources said the CBSE (CBSE school start date) and other boards conduct their final exams in mid-February and the results are declared a few days later.

Many schools affiliated with CBSE used to begin academic activities in March itself, which is supposed to be a break before the academic year began on April 1. Sources said most CBSE schools have followed this schedule for many years. After receiving complaints from parents, the board issued this circular, sources said.
