Omicron Spreads Across country, 82% of Schools Closed

Sharp rise in Covid-19 Omicron cases in U.S. school officials are struggling. Winter break can’t come soon enough. There were 646 Covid-related school closings for this week, up from 356 the week before, according to Burbio, a data service that aggregates calendars nationwide.

On New York’s Long Island, the district switched its high school to remote instruction starting Dec. 17 after infections caused staffing shortages. In Maine, the Otisfield Community School shut down last week; the Sun Journal newspaper in Lewiston reported that nearly 70% of the students were in quarantine.

“This is a massive in school transmission rate far exceeding anything we’ve seen thus far,” Maine administrators said in a post on social media. The disruption is a setback for officials who had hoped to minimize disruption for students and keep them in class not to mention for parents who need functioning schools to enable their own work.

Children ages 5-11 became eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine in early November in U.S. As of Dec. 15, about 20 percent of 5-11-year olds had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which cited CDC data. That rate is about 61 percent for the 12-17 age group.

IN India Omicron cases continue to rise in the country, National COVID-19 Supermodel Committee on Saturday predicted that the third wave of corona is expected to hit India in February. Expect lockdown again in January last week. Giving details, Vidyasagar, who is the head of the National COVID-19 Supermodel Committee, said India will have Omicron’s third wave but it will be milder than the second wave.

He said this as the Daily COVID-19 caseload in India that is currently around 7,500 infections is expected to increase once the Omicron starts displacing Delta as the dominant variant. However, he added that there will definitely be a third wave of corona in India.

Giving further details, he told media that said that the third wave of corona is likely to arrive early next year in India and will be milder than the second wave due to a large-scale immunity present in the country. He added that there are around 7,500 cases per day which is sure to go up once Omicron starts displacing Delta as the dominant variant.
