Samsung has stopped regular software and security updates for the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, marking the end of support for two of its older smartwatch models. The September 2026 security update no longer lists either device, indicating that the August security patch was the final update for the series.
The decision is not unexpected considering that both smartwatches were introduced in 2021 and are now around five years old. While the end of updates may be disappointing for existing owners, it does not mean that the watches will suddenly stop functioning.
Users who have a Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 4 Classic can continue using the devices for their existing features. Calls, notifications, fitness tracking and other functions that already work on the watch should continue to be available, although future software improvements should not be expected.
The Galaxy Watch 4 series holds an important place in Samsung’s smartwatch history. These models were among the company’s early watches to adopt Wear OS, replacing the older software approach and giving Samsung a closer connection with Google’s smartwatch ecosystem.
Samsung had promised four major Wear OS upgrades for the series, and the devices progressed from Wear OS 3.5 through later versions, eventually reaching Wear OS 6. With that promised major update cycle completed, the latest security patch now appears to mark the final stage of official software support.
For existing owners, there is no immediate requirement to replace the watch simply because updates have ended. If the device is working properly and its current features meet the user’s needs, it can continue to be used.
However, the situation is different for people planning to keep the watch for several more years. The absence of future security patches means users will not receive newer software improvements or fixes that are introduced for supported Galaxy Watch models.
Extra caution may be appropriate when using any older connected device for sensitive activities. Users should pay attention to the services and applications they use on the watch, particularly if the device is connected to accounts or services involving personal or financial information.
Those who are considering an upgrade can use the end of the support cycle as a reason to compare newer Galaxy Watch models. A newer smartwatch can provide continued software support along with newer health, fitness and connectivity features, depending on the model.
Galaxy Watch 4 owners who want to check their current software version can do so through the Galaxy Wearable application. After opening the app, users can go to Watch Settings, then Watch Software Update, followed by Download and Install.
The update can also be checked directly from the smartwatch. Users can open Settings, select Software Update and then choose Download and Install.
The important point for owners is that the absence of a new September security update is not necessarily an indication of a problem with their individual watch. For the Galaxy Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch 4 Classic, the devices have simply reached the end of their planned software support period.
